From Listening to Action: Building Trust Between Communities and Public Services

This is an engagement session that held on the 1st of August, 2026. Our Building Trust Between Communities and Public Services project brought community members and public service partners together in Newport for open and honest conversations around safeguarding, hate crime, domestic abuse, bullying, community safety and trust in public services.

Following two Community Listening Sessions, our Community Engagement Session created a space for communities and services to listen, learn, ask questions and better understand one another. One message came through strongly: building trust is a shared responsibility. Public services have a role in listening, understanding different cultures and communicating clearly, while communities also have a role in engaging, asking questions, understanding their rights and responsibilities and seeking support when needed.

The conversation continues beyond the project. Dúdú Heritage has recently been invited by Newport City Council’s Communities & Cohesion Team to contribute to the development of Newport’s Hate Crime Policy, creating another opportunity for our community to lend their voices, perspectives and lived experiences to work that affects them. From Listening to Action, the conversation continues.

This project was funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent (OPCC), with support from Newport City Council’s Communities & Cohesion Team, our partners, facilitators, volunteers and community members.
